On February 12, Online Computer Library Centerannounced it had received a $145,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for projects related to data sharing. The funds will be used "to build an information architecture and model behaviors that museums can use to routinely exchange data" using the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting. Museums participating in the project with OCLC Programs and Research include the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the National Gallery of Art; Princeton University Art Museum; Yale University Art Gallery; Victoria & Albert Museum (research aggregation only); and the Cleveland Museum of Art (research aggregation only).
The Metropolitan Museum of Art hosted a kick-off meeting January 28-29 to bring participants together and begin work on this initiative. The project is expected to be completed by the end of March 2009.
