Yet Even More About the Politcs Surrounding the Oslo Accords

The Israelis were conducting talks with not only the Palestinians, but also the Jordanians and the Lebanese. In his book, Mr. Peres describes how the negotiations came to encompass many topics of concern to the multiple participants.
In short, we had to work toward establishing a new Middle East based on prosperity and hope instead of poverty and anguish.
In a very real way, the Oslo negotiations encompassed the hopes of countless generations. If they failed, the feeling of hopelessness characterizing the prospect of peace could only increase. Their success could mean a complete and utter change in the structure and attitude of the entire region and, indeed, the world.

The politics surrounding the Oslo Accords were (and remain today) as complex as the issues they addressed. Shimon Peres knew this. He, perhaps better than anyone else, understood the true nature of the work produced in Oslo, signed in Washington, and felt around the world.

This was not the time for memories. It was a time to form a new agenda. The accord in Oslo and the ceremony in Washington were but a stepping-stone from which to leap higher and farther than ever before.
