The Brazilian government has made no great move to counteract this phenomenon. The massacres go on free from punishment. One of the greatest invaders, the Reserve Indigena Alto Turiacy (RIAT), has not been confronted as of yet. The government has failed to fulfill a past agreement which required that land be demarcated with titles issued to each tribe. The demarcations that were made are not respected or obeyed, and the FUNAI, which is supposed to protect these indigenous nations, has made no effort to support them. This is a direct violation of Brazilian law ( CRFB 1988, article 231, paragraph1 and 4), which states that government is responsible for ñdemarcating, protecting, and demanding respectî for indigenous land and people.
