What Should the US Role Be in the Peace Process?
US involvement (as the only remaining world power) is needed at the highest level of honesty and impartiality. Its strategic alliance with Israel should not dictate a biased course; it should exercise its powers for just peace-making, and peace-keeping.
- The US can maintain the integrity of the process by ensuring compliance with the signed resolutions by both sides.
- Reinforcing and maintaining terms of reference such as the equation of "land for peace", and the UN resolutions 242 and 338.
- Creating a system of accountability for any violations, and if need be arbitration of disputes.
- Mediating/presenting alternatives and bridging solutions (even-handedly).
- Maintaining the international componenet (European, Arab, & global), particularly the role of the doner community (who are paying for peace-building).
- Dealing with instability in ways which would diffuse volatile situations by providing peaceful ways of solving disagreements.
- Being a witness, and holding trilateral talks when needed.
