Summary

The complexity of the global deforestation problem is mind boggling. The political web of governments and NGO's reflects the inter-depedance that exists in a forest eco-system. Every organism relies on the others and exists in a delicate balance. The balance of the forest must be restored and protected, but the political scale is being recalibrated. The expansion of NGO's demands governmental attention. Cooperation is beginning to take place, though a wide expanse remains to be crossed.

The effectiveness of solutions is difficult to calculate. Certainly, knowledge of the problem has spread like wild fire. This knowledge, however, has not been enough for governments to committ to binding treaties. A recognition of responsibility beyond state borders must appear before concrete progress can be made. Untill then, NGO's will continue working, acknowledging that there is no time to wait for governmental action.

The community must reach consensus on a workable definition for sustainable development and then commit to its enactment. Lifestyle changes and redistribution of wealth are necessary to end deforestation. We have a long road ahead of us but together we can assure that the trees remain for our grand children.
