The Digital Divide and Race

The Digital Divide:

difference between African Americans and whites

The overall differences between whites and African Americans on computer access and general Web use differ greatly. Whites are more likely than African-Americans to have a home computer in their home, whites with computers are almost 50 % and African-American around 15%(as of 1998). The access to the internet also varies greatly, access to the internet comes form home, work and school. 30% of whites have an easy access to the internet and 20% of African Americans have access to the web. Note that the numbers are form 1998 and will have changed significantly to the present. The difference between whites and blacks in the year 2003 are still very significant.

One of the other determining factor in the difference in race, is the difference in salaries. Whites making over 60,000 dollars a year have over a 65% chance of have a computer at work while Blacks have over 80%. Blacks making over 60,000 have a 80% chance of having a computer at home is near 80% while whites at the same rate is near 75%. The two races shows very similar while people with a low income of under 20,000 have a much lower chance of having a computer. At home both races have a about a 15% chance of have a computer at work. And at home about one in five whites have a computer, but only one in nine blacks have one. This shows that African Americans must obtain higher education levels in order to achieve the same income and computer access as whites. Older African Americans are also not able to achieve computer access dues to income and better jobs. There realy is no difference in race, but the gap comes from the diference in income. The reason why there is a statistical difference between races is that whites out-number African Americans in upper level income brackets.
