Globalism and The Digital Divide

Globalism and The Digital Divide:

Does globalisation accentuate the gulf between digital 'haves' and 'have-nots'?

Globalism has made the differencebetween the digital "haves" and "have nots" much more noticeable. Even though the Internet and Communications revolution is taking place in the world many countries are faced with problems on how to use this new technology. In India, for example, many people lack the basic skills to use this new technology. This results from poor or little to no schooling in the area of technology. even though countries such as the United States, Japan, and Russia are taking big steps twoard bridging this gap, most other countries are still far behind, but with recent funding programs the future for technology in these computer illiterate countries is looking much better. The first step to eliminating this divide has to start with getting computers and internet service to these poorer countries.

As of 1999 the United States and Canada made up 65.3% of all internet hosts in the world, and it is safe to say that these figures have not changed a whole lot since then. While over half of the households in America have a computer of some sort some countries are not even close.

The Global Digital Divide is something that most americans dont notice because the technology in the United States is far and beyond the level of available technology in other countries. In Africa the need for computer technology is very evident and it is clear that funds are needed to compete with nations such as japan and the United States. There must be organizations that bring technology to these underdeveloped place in the world in order for them to compete with nations such as the U.S. and Japan, and fully bridge the digital gap. There should be buildigs set aside for internet usage in underdeveloped countries, it is extreemly important to bring technology to places of poverty.

The Digital Divide in the USA

With thechnology becoming more and more important many people in the United states are being left behind. whith the adoption of computers and the internet by many households in the US many questions are being raised, such as "are children getting access to the right kinds of things on the internet to help prepare them for 'real worl' life? How many adults have this access as well? How can this change society? Do minorities have this access, and if so, how many do?" answers to these questions must found in order for the U.S. to bridge the digital divide.
