What is Pangea?

In 1915, Alfred Wegener wrote a book called The Origin of the Continents and Oceans. This book challenged the geologic theory that all the continents were joined together to formed a supercontinent.

translation:

Alfred Wegener believed the continents used to fit together like a puzzle.

How did this happen?

In 1960, Harry Hess, a profesor at Princeton University took on Wegener's theory. He proposed that the continents drifted because brand new ocean floor formed inbetween the continents. This process is called sea-floor spreading.

Because of this phenomenon geologist called this the theory of plate tectonics.
