Countdown Mailings and Forms
Q: I will be in Europe over the summer. What should I do about
the deadlines for various forms and sets of information?
A: It
is very important to figure out the details before
you depart. If you can't receive mail at your summer destination,
you need to be in contact with someone at home who can share
the information you will receive and get your responses
recorded. Failing
to return preference forms will affect your housing. Fortunately,
Residence Life has a FAX number (765/983-1552) and email: reslife@earlham.edu as
well as the information on this web site, so you should be able
to keep in touch with us from around the world.
New Student Orientation
Q: What events and sessions will occur during New Student Orientation?
A: New Student Orientation is an exciting introduction
to Earlham! For details on the schedule of events, check out the
New Student Orientation link on the Countdown
to Earlham web site.
Roommates
Q: How
is my roommate picked? I am often shy/homesick/grumpy and sometimes
I snore/stay up late/forget to go to class. I want to make
sure that my roommate will be able to live with me.
A: Residence Life knows that your first-year
roommate plays an important role in your first year at Earlham.
That's why Residence Life will hand-match each pair
of roommates. We will take the information you provide
on your information form and do our best to make a good match,
taking into account academic interests, extracurricular activities,
region, and living habits. We hope you will find a common bond
to form a friendship; the differences that you discover will allow
you to learn from each other. Finally, please remember that although
we do all we can to make a good match, not all roommates end up
as best friends. Most students branch out and meet new people during
the year - plus, you've got a whole hall full of students to meet
and get to know.
Q: When
do I find out the name and address of my roommate?
A: You
will find out the name and address of your roommate in the second
countdown mailing that will be mailed to youon June 11. We
encourage you to begin forming a relationship with your roommate
before the beginning of school. Contact each other, discuss academic
and social interests, summer plans, packing lists etc.
Q: What
should I bring to campus?
A: Many
students bring bare essentials (clothes, alarm clock, teddy bear)
at first and have bigger items shipped later once they have met
their roommate. Others choose to buy larger items here at local
stores. It is important to remember the size of residence hall
rooms. An average room size is approximately: 10.5' x 16.5' ,
window: 5' x 5', and ceiling 9'. Your room is already equipped
with twin-sized beds, desks and chairs,
dressers, towel rack or hook, a bookcase and a mirror. Extra-long twin beds on campus are in Barrett, Mills, Warren, Wilson, Hoerner, and Olvey-Andis - so if you've been assigned to that hall will you
need
to purchase the "extra-long" twin sheets. We are in the process of switching all campus bed to the extra-long twin size. Also,
roommates often enjoy shopping in town and picking out their
room décor together.

Housing Assignments
Q: How
are the housing assignments made?
A: As
you'll recall from your Housing Questionnaire, you had the opportunity
to indicate a preference for a four-class-coed hall, a four-class-single
gender floor, a wellness lifestyle hall, a quiet hall, or one
of the theme halls. We will assign you to your residence hall based
on these preferences. We
will
work to place you in a residence hall encompassing as many of your
preferences as we can!
