Departmental Objectives

  • Provide a balanced curriculum based in the fundamentals of the arts and crafts of theatre

  • Provide certain appreciation courses which serve the liberal arts general elective needs of the campus community

  • Provide fundamental training experience and guidance for students whose vocational goal is the professional theatre

  • Provide training and background for graduate study

  • Provide fundamental liberal arts training and experience for students whose avocational interest is theatre.

Recent graduates from the Theatre Arts Department have gone in two general directions — graduate studies and pre-professional training. We have students attending some of the finest graduate programs in the country such as Yale University and New York University. We currently have graduates in professional internship programs at the Actors Theatre of Louisville, Steppenwolf in Chicago and in companies in Minneapolis, Seattle, St. Louis and San Francisco. Still others are using the creative, organizational, communication and interpersonal skills developed from the theatre major in occupations not related to theatre directly, from teaching of cognitively impaired middle-school students to sports broadcasting to business management.
