Versions of index.html
As time and the development of my skills have permitted, I have updated my web site and changed the layout several times since 1999.
I first started creating web pages in the winter of 1998 when I realized that my work in state-wide young adult ministry needed to be supported by a web site. I didn't create a personal home page until I started graduate school and had the luxuries of additional time and server space.
The following are the index pages of each subsequent version. I have also archived the photographs page of each version, but all other links from these pages are now defunct.

September 1999-April 2000
This was the first layout. Clean, simple and functional. Its primary purpose was to display a set of web "bookmarks" I could access from the school's computer lab. It also gave friends and family access to some of my photos. Early on, in response to my own difficulty finding out the server and account information for my school, I also created a simple web development and posting guide for my classmates. |

May 2000-August 2001
The original layout with additional photos and an animated gif. I found that I could automatically "flip" through a small selection of images using a very slowly animated gif. Of course, download time is an issue with this technique and the image quality is quite low. |

August 2001-January 2002
Following a request by a non-profit to use two of my photographs in their newsletter, I realized people who didn't know me were actually visiting my site. That realization motivated me to develop the content and layout for a wider audience. I was curious about the use of spacer images, thin lines and color blocks as design elements (some inspiration credit goes to CNN-online). I learned a lot in this redesign, and was able to apply some of what I learned to a redesign of Earlham's Alumni web pages. |

January 2002-July 2002
A temporary fascination with dark backgrounds and curves inspired this version. My primary motivation for creating this version was simply to figure out how I could create a curved look within rectangular tables. I wasn't very satisfied with the overall look, however, so I soon created an alternate set of gateway pages for my site. |

February 2002-July 2002
I was interested in experimenting with a more simple, less cluttered, entirely "above the fold" look that would be easy to navigate and could be quickly absorbed. I was also intrigued by the use of a dark background as a way to highlight my photographs (inspiration credit goes to Melanie Weidner Watson). I never fully implemented this version because I couldn't figure out how to apply it satisfactorily to the photo pages. It didn't seem to be a practical design for my purposes. |

July 2002-present
I finally had some time to update again. I wanted to return to simpler code and a cleaner look for my pages. I kept the basic header and three column structure, but gave it a lighter look and feel. I finally deviated from my beloved blues and used some pastels to further soften the look. With this version I also focused on ease of navigation and made sure I had appropriate nav bars on every page. |
