Sociolinguistic problems today exist in many federal states. The ecology of national minorities is directly connected with the ecology of their native languages, for instance the Welsh language in the United Kingdom. In contemporary turbulent Russia the problem of the ecology of nations and languages is in the center of political and academic discussions. It is the basis of numerous political speculations which lead to confrontations and ethnic conflicts in these federal states.
The women's movement has to understand complicated sociocultural and sociolinguistic problems of national minorities in the Russian Federation in order to be able to affect their solution. The positive, constructive position of the women's movement should calm the situation on the basis of preserving the best traditions in ethnopedagogics, native culture, literature, and language (in order to avoid the aggressive role once played by the English language in relation to Welsh).
