ABKHASIA AFTER THE WAR: ENVIRONMENTAL CONSEQUENCES

Nina Z. Tarkil

Abkhazia, city of Sukhumi, ul.Eshba, 173 b

Abkhasia is a heavenly place with a unique environment combining sea landscape, humid subtropics and snowy mountains. After two years of war we can assess the level of damage to flora and fauna of the area. The major part of the territory is still set with mines. The Institute of Experimental Pathology and Therapy which was the first in the world to start experimental research on monkeys, is practically destroyed, most animals have died. Substantial damage was done to the botanical gardens with its unique flora including old elephant palms. In search of fuel local people had to use these trees to heat their houses. Instability and military accidents in this area are still fraught with other environmental disasters. Women of Abkhasia call all public and political organizations to support their efforts in restoration of the environment of the area.
