Public Safety

Public Safety is committed to creating and maintaining a safe and secure environment by providing effective, efficient and consistent service to every member of the college community.

Public Safety is an integral part of campus life and on duty 24 hours a day, year-round, patrolling campus and responding to emergencies and requests for assistance.

For life-threatening emergencies needing fire, police or medical assistance, members of the community are requested to call 911 immediately and then notify Public Safety afterward. For non-life-threatening incidents and requests for assistance, contact Public Safety.

Campus Public Safety Officers have the full authority granted by Earlham College to enforce the rules and regulations as outlined in the student, staff and faculty handbooks. They have the authority to detain persons and request identification and will immediately involve the Richmond Police Department if criminal activity is observed or reported.

Numerous emergency call boxes are installed around campus for emergency or other assistance, including at the entrance to every residence hall.

Public Safety manages and issues alerts via the College’s emergency notification system which includes text/phone/e- mail notifications when necessary.

Our Services

765-983-1400 – The only 24-hour office on campus. The Public Safety communications center receives and dispatches calls for assistance, monitors alarm systems, documents campus activity, provides information, issues new or replacement ID cards, issues parking permits (student, employee and visitor) and answers the main campus switchboard.

Public Safety will engrave your personal valuables (i.e.: laptops, phones, game systems, etc.) with a unique identifier chosen by you to deter theft. Get more information HERE.

Students and employees may register their bicycle free of charge with Public Safety. Upon registration you will receive a registration sticker that will aid in getting your bike returned should it ever be taken.

Public Safety is the primary response to campus emergencies 24 hours a day, requesting assistance from the Richmond Fire and Police when necessary.

Safety escorts are provided to students, employees and visitors around campus 24 hours a day. Call for an officer to walk with you to your destination at 765-983-1400.

Information if offered to the campus community on a variety of topics to include crime prevention, fire safety, bicycle safety, basic vehicle maintenance, and more.

Groups or departments on campus may request Public Safety personnel for large campus events, concerts, athletic events, etc. Requests for event security should be made HERE.

Public Safety provides motor vehicle jumpstarts or lockout assistance for vehicles on campus.

The Department of Public Safety patrols the campus 24 hours per day/365 days per year, responds to calls for service, and reports violations of state law and College policy. The department works closely with Richmond police and fire departments and other local, state and federal agencies.

Public Safety provides transportation to Earlham students with ID around the immediate college area, free of charge. The shuttle operates during the school year on a specific route making stops at numerous popular locations throughout Richmond.
